Use category images/icons to link products

Hi,

I've just recently discovered HikaShop and I have installed it on a new website that I'm building for a large garden centre, in the hope that it will meet their needs. I'm presently exploring all the functionality and getting to know the software, which I must say seems excellent! :) Most of the configuration options seem fairly self-explanatory and everything seems to be very well thought-out and comprehensive.

One thing though, and I'm probably missing something really obvious here, but I am struggling to figure out how to set up navigation to products through category (and sub-category) images/icons.

I have a parent category of 'Products', in which I'd like to put sub-categories, which in turn will contain products and/or further sub-categories. i.e
PRODUCTS ==> PRODUCT CATEGORY (with icon/image) ==> PRODUCT LIST

When 'products' is accessed via a menu item, I would like to display all the 'products' categories as images/icons which, when clicked, will list all the products (or sub-categories) in that category.

The first part I have managed and clicking a 'products' menu item displays the category images/icons, but when you click on one of the images/icons, instead of entering the relevant category to display the products therein, it simply displays the image/icon of the category selected.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Hi,

It sounds like you don't have a hikashop products listing module enabled in the "associated modules" option of your menu (or that this module is not configured properly). You can find that option by editing the menu via the menu Display->Content menus in HikaShop.
Normally, when you create a hikashop category listing menu, that is created automatically so you don't have to mess with that.
We also have a step by step which explains how to create such menu:
www.hikashop.com/en/support/documentatio...html#categories_menu

Thanks very much for the reply Nicolas :)

You were correct, the product listing module was disabled for some reason.

Still trying to get my head around how exactly Hikashop integrates with Joomla and what the correct menu configuration and structure should be, but I think I'm getting there now ...

It seems that I now have to have a separate content module for each and every Joomla menu item that links to Hikashop products, which take the form of 'Associated products listing for category listing menu nnn' (where 'nnn' is the menu item number). Is that correct?

Thanks again :)

That's correct.

You can choose to use always the same module, but by using each time a different module, you can have different products listing display options for different categories if you need to.

Hi,

Ok, I think I'm getting the hang of HikaShop now ...

I must say it seems an excellent system so far, with all the features that we need (and more), so I think we'll probably be sticking with it and upgrading to the full version in due course.

We are yet to put any products online and, once we do, initially at least, the shop will run in 'catalogue mode' until the website and finer details, such as payment processes, are complete.

The stage we're presently at, is a live website with menus that link to the HikaShop category descriptions that will ultimately display the products.
The website is here: www.summerseatgardencentre.co.uk

I just have a few more questions before we proceed ...

Please see attached screenshot image: I have renamed each of the Hikashop content modules in accordance with their associated categories, rather than the associated menu item number, then used the same set of modules for both the top and side menus, to make finding the right module simpler and to save having 2 modules for each category. Is this ok?

Also, as you can see from the attached screenshot, the modules are disabled. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether they are enabled or not. Is this correct?

And one final question/issue, there seems to be a problem searching the shop categories at present: If, for example, you enter 'Seasonal Bedding' into the site search box then click on the result, 'Plants', it leads to an invalid category url.

Many thanks :)

1. Yes that's ok. It's indeed better to find the one you're looking for easily :)

2. Yes it's doesn't make any difference. In fact you should leave them unpublished so that your template does not display them in the left column of your template.

3. You should set the id of a HikaShop category listing menu in the itemid menu option of the hikashop categories/products search plugin so that this does not happen.

Thanks for the quick response Nicolas!

That's excellent. I think I understand it much better now.

I've set the relevant itemid in the search plugins, as you suggested, and search is now working correctly! :)
