Choose product color by color images vs dropdown?

Does anyone have an idea how to add color (picker) thumbs to a product? Instead of an dropdownlist with the names of the colors.

Specifically, I like to add mini thumbs of textures...

It could be done with a characteristic display template override as explained in our developer's documentation:

Thanks for guiding me into the right direction!

Love the overrides, so updating won't (immediatly) destroy custom changes. Great!
