Custom fields on checkout

I have two sets of custom fields that I need to show at different points along the checkout path. It appears that in the configuration options there is only one opportunity to add custom fields and therefore both sets show up together at the same point. One set relate to shipping, the other set to payment.

Is there any way to break out the two sets of custom fields to show them at different points in the checkout process? Thanks.

There is actually no option to do that, every "Order" custom fields will display through the "Field" step of your checkout workflow.
To do what you want you'll directly have to customize the files of the "Checkout" view which will require development skills.
