Managements of Variants and Characteristics

Perhaps I'm not understanding what needs to be done.

What I want to do is provide add-on options to a base product, like when you purchase a computer. They allow you to add on options.

I see I can do this which characteristics and variants. This works well, but, when I want to add many options, it gives me a description field for every possible variant. So now, with 3 characteristics fields, each with its own options, I now have a total of 44 variants, each with it's own possible description. I then have to go under each variant and lay out the different combinations of items they have selected.

Would it not be easier to manage, when I add a characteristic, have a field to input the characteristics there, then place the description below that characteristic.

Now when I choose a variant combination, that characteristic is added simply to the main item description. Stacked on so to speak as they select variations. This way, if I make a product change, I would only need change the item in the characteristics area one time, instead of having to go adjust the item under every possible variant?
