i would like te be possible choose between buy / rent 4 days / rent 8 days
and then on productbase select which of these item are 'on'

furthermore there should be some sort of rent administration

is Hikashop the right choice for me??

Sure,

You can for example :
- Go to "Hikashop->Products->Characteristics"
- Create a new characteristics named "Type" for example and add 3 values like buy now / rent for 4 days / rent for 8 days

- Then go to "Hikashop->Products->Your product"
- Add your characteristic through your characteristic tab
- Then manage your product's variants through the "manage variants" button

The solution will probably to create 2 date custom fields from the "Item" table, through "Hikashop->Display->Custom fields".

the amount of the deposit varies per product

You already can add different prices regarding if you "buy" or "hire" so can you give me more information about : "there will be a deposit charged and returned when item is returned".
Do you want you customer to pay even when he return his product ?

yes, it needs to be on the bill, they have to pay.
when the product is returned (in good order) the deposit will be paid back
