UK Counties

Sorry to throw this at you again, as I can see that you've been struggling through the very special confusion that is the UK postal address - what serves as a county, in particular. The ones in the Hikashop list for Wales are a bit of a mix between very old and very new ones, and there's quite a bit of overlap (Blaenau Gwent is in Gwent, for example, and no-one uses Glamorgan as a postal county any more).

Lists of current administrative counties (England), regions and districts ( Scotland ), principal areas ( Wales ) and districts ( Northern Ireland ) organised by local government are quite fluid - the Northern Ireland Executive is currently planning to reduce the number of districts to 11, and there's been talk of reorganisation in Wales for ages too.

There's no one, simple solution, (see this discussion on Geocaching) but the closest I've seen to county names that I would recognise are the ceremonial county names in the Lieutenancy areas . Using this list would mean there was no overlap between geographical areas. Some of them are a bit old-fashioned, but they're unlikely to be affected by legislation which redraws or reorganises county government boundaries, so would require less maintenance in the long-term.

Or you could just put the ability to edit UK counties in a plug-in ;)

You can already edit the counties via the menu System->Zones in order to have them like you want.

As you said, counties in the UK is a real nightmare :) It's been changed twice already in HikaShop in less than 2 years. And as we are not in the UK ourselves, it makes it even harder to see what should and should not be used.

In any case, thank you for your input on the matter.

I'm not so sure about your list.

Take for example the first one: Bath and North East Somerset
You list it as incorrect. But as far as I can see it is correct:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bath_and_North_East_Somerset
That page even says that it was created following the abolition of Avon which you list as a correct one.

If only we could find a clear list of all the counties which can be on a letter address in the UK...

Yes I have been looking further, I think here might be a better source. As an aside, Counties are not required for the postal address in the UK. The post code does that job.

The question really is what piece of text is needed in the addresses ? Because if you don't need the counties for the addresses, you can unpublish the field or the UK states and the problem is solved.
And apparently that is the case: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/royal-ma...ostal-addresses.html
I'm starting to think that maybe we should leave the UK states unpbulished by default maybe.
