Response from the paypal server was invalid

we recieved the email below after someone tried to pay via paypal for one of our products:

Hello,
A paypal notification was refused because the response from the paypal server was invalid

This notification was for the order C1P3D60 on the website www.walksandwildlife.co.uk/

we've not had this happen before and nothing has changed in the last few days. we've been accepting paypal orders no problem and they have been being confirmed.

could this be a one off?

the documentation in the link above suggests that the hikashop paypal plugin may need to be updated. is this the case?

will the debug mode show anything on the front end of the site to the customer or is it just for the admins with access to the back end?
