currency S change

I have an australian store, i would like to change AUDxxx.xx to $xxx.xx or A$xxx.xx i did try changing AUD to $ but paypal wouldnt work

You need to change the "Format" option of your currency as explained in the help screen.

Go in the menu System->Currencies, edit your currency and look on the right of the screen:
