Sales tax issue

I am in Michigan (state in USA)

I sell 2 kinds of products – some taxable in Michigan & some not (food items)

The system differentiates between Michigan and other states just fine – but charges sales tax on ALL items sold in Michigan.

I have 2 Product tax categories set up: Michigan Sales Tax & Michigan Non Taxable
If I enable both of them the system charges tax on every item in both categories.

Hi,

In the product edition page, you have to specify the tax rule, if you don't specify the tax rule so it takes the default one, in your cases it seems to be with tax ;)

I have a 1lb jar of honey set up as "non taxable" (see image) and it still comes through as taxable (image)

Hi,

It looks like you have variants for the product.
What is the tax configured for the variants ?

I don't see how you can change the tax status in the variants - only the main one set all - correct. I do have 5 variants in this product and there is no way to change them. What am I missing?

Hi,
Don't you have any shipping/payment prices ? I think that the $ 0.47 "Michigan sales tax" is coming from one of these prices and not from your product.

I resolved the problem - I found that some items in this category were working properly (not charging Michigan sales tax) and some were not with no difference in settings.

Then I deleted any extra references to "Michigan Non Taxable" and left only none & Michigan taxable. It finally started working when I changed prices and saved. I think the system needed to be "toggled" - I have seen this happen before.

Thanks for your help.
