Choose from a Listing

We sale articles. A subscription would be 12 articles. What would be the best way to choose those 12 articles from a listing for one subscription price?

We will need more information on what you're trying to do to be able to answer you precisely.
How many articles do you have in total ?
Are you only selling one subscription or individual articles as well ?
What kind of information do you want to show for each article ?
If you have additional information, do not hesitate to share them so that we can have a good picture of what you're trying to achieve.

We have a one year subscription worth 12 credits and a two year subscription worth 24 credits for Nebraska license holders only. They can choose from 30 single issues. So they might choose either 6 or 12 issues (articles). It would be great to be able to show the title but a code would also work. These same issues are in a category of their own but some of the issues are not available for this state which is one reason I'm not working off the Issue Category. I need to be able to list these issues preferably with the title of the article in a listing with check boxes so all they have to do is check off the issues they want to include in their subscription.

It would be like buying a group of anything for one price, and then choosing what's to be included for the group price.

I've looked at options but it seems I have to have the Business version for that to work. We have the Essential version.

Mmmm. I think that the best will be to create a custom field of the table "item" (business edition only) of the type "checkbox" and enter your articles as values of the field in order to have one checkbox per article on your subscription page which would actually be a product page.
You could potentially use options instead of a custom field (options are available in the Essential edition) but they will appear as dropdowns on the product page, not checkboxes.
Then, I would recommend to add a small cart plugin to verify that they only selected the correct number of values (or options if you decide to go with options) when adding the product to the cart to avoid users selecting the wrong number of articles in their orders.
We have documentation on that for developers here:

Thanks, but that doesn't seem to work. They need to pick 6 titles from a list of 30. The option just gives me the list with a dropdown containing the characteristics which is not what I need. It seems archaic to tell them to fax me the titles you want but that's what this has come down to.

I might be able to use a coupon, I think the money is consistent but not the number of titles. It's not cost effective to move up to the Business edition because this concerns a few customers. We've only had 2 orders of this type although that might change.

So if you know any other method, I'm all ears. We are using the Essentials edition.

I don't see the problem with that ? If you create six options with the same characteristic containing your 30 values, your users will have to select 6 times a value in that list of 30 values.

Then I must be doing something wrong. I get a list of all the issues but I can only choose a characteristic for each issue. And if I add to cart I get ALL 30 issues added. I'm not able to choose just 6 of them. ????

I think I've read this somewhere. I need to make a hidden category with no characteristics attached to it that lists the issues for this option. Is that correct--maybe?

You created 30 options with 3 choices for each. I said that you should create 6 options with 30 choices each. So we're not talking about the same thing here.

No, I didn't create anything. When I go to options, it allows me to pick from categories that are already there. I have a category called Issues that people can buy singularly. This category has 3 characteristics. It is the only close to what I need.

I don't see where I can create anything in options, it only allows me to choose from what has already been created.

Options are not like characteristics which I can create, at least so it seems to me at this point.

I'm getting closer. But get an error when I try to use the option.

Also, in the Hikashop Demo, in the OPTIONS category where does the URL come from for each product in that category?

Nicholas,

I finally figured out what you said to do: 6 options with 30 values. But I get this Notice: The product Choice 2: V11N2 is not available

So I guess I don't have something marked. Have you ever seen this notice before?

Here's a new screenshot with all the options and 8 of the values. Maybe not, unable to add an attachment this morning. Will try later.

Regarding your error, it's probably because you didn't set any price in your options' variants and that you have the option "display add to cart button for free products" turned off in the configuration. I would recommend to check that this option is turned on.

That made the order go thru. Thanks! Now it list the value for each selected option but says it's free. It's not free, the product has the discounted price. Can the word free be deleted or changed?
