conflicting shipping modules

Is it possible to use the ups shipping plugin and the manual shipping plugin? For the ups I want to give the user ups choices. For larger products which have to be shipped by truck I want to just assign a shipping cost. I know how to configure both methods, I just haven't figured out how to use both. When I activate the Manual shipping method it seems to over ride the ups module. Your help will certainly be appreciated.

You can display the both choices at the checkout, but the customer can only select one shipping method (with the current system)
If the two choices are not displayed it's maybe a configuration problem, maybe restrictions or something else.
