Hi, experiencing two issues, I want to set sales taxes for customers based on where they are shopping from, I see a lot of zones setup but will I have to specify the tax rate for every state myself?

Also on my registration form I can only select Europe as my country, even when I go to Display -> Custom Fields and select address_country I can only select Europe there as well. How can I resolve this? Thanks!

1. It depends. You can group the states with the same tax rates in a new zone and then add your tax rule for that zone so that it applies to a whole bunch of states. Now if every state of your country has a different rate, then yes, you will have to enter it for each.

2. That's not normal. It means that you messed with the zones. If you see only the europe zone there it can means 2 things:
- you changed the type of the europe zone to country instead of tax and you unpublished or deleted all the countries.
- you changed the zone of the country custom field to tax instead of country.

Thanks again Nicolas, but I'm sorry I'm getting confused by how to setup the taxes. To keep it simple, how can I set one flat tax rate for all orders?

You can go to the menu System->Taxes and do like explained in the documentation: www.hikashop.com/support/documentation/i...ing.html#description

You can use the test area of the import screen in order to rapidly add that:

product_code,product_tax_id
prod1,XX
prod2,XX
prod3,XX
prod4,XX
prod5,XX
...etc...

That should speedup the process...

Thanks!!! Hope I can sneak another question in here - I set 'Show taxed prices' to 'No Tax' but it seems to only apply to the Product page. Prices on Product Listing still include taxes, is there another setting I missed that controls this?

Yes. The listings have their own options that you can access via the menus Display->Content menus and Display->Content modules.

So now it seems we only need to charge a sales tax for customers within the state of California. I've set that up and so far seems to be working, however when users logout and no state information is known about them, the price with taxes is displayed, which is an issue since it could be more than what they have to pay. Is there a way to set default prices for unknown locations?

When the system doesn't know the zone of the user, it uses the "main tax zone" option of the configuration. So if you set it in a zone where there are no taxes, you will have what you want.

I'm a bit confused about tax rates.

In product configuration menu, you can select a tax category. But there doesn't seem to be a way to assign more than one rate per category. That being the case, how will the tax change depending on the province being shipped to?

You need to set tax rules via the menu System->Taxation. That's where you do the link between tax categories and zones and type of customers.
Everything is explained there:
