Add Custom Fields to the Product Display Table?

I am building a site that will show an inventory of used cars at a junk yard. The owner would like to list his inventory through the site but we would like to have separate fields in the display table for things such as Brand, Year, Engine Size, and Color. Currently the only fields in the table are the image and product name. I have turned pricing off. Also is there any way to be able to click the column headers to have the display table sorted by that particular field?

I was thinking that using the Characteristics feature would be useful for this but I'm not sure if it's what I need or not. Would be nice for the owner to be able to type these characteristics in by hand when creating a new item rather then having to select from a drop down list-for things such as year model etc.

Thank you very much.

There is no option to activate the sorting. You would have to edit the file listing_table of the view product and add the code to handle it yourself.

If you want to add additional columns, that's the same. For custom fields of the table "product" it should be quite easy to add. If you don't want to use dropdowns but an input box, you can just change the type of the custom field.
