Unpublish empty categories?

I've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find relevant info for this...

Setting up online store that has a total of around 650 categories/subcategories. I've been doing product imports of around 5000 products and have found the easiest way so far is to have all categories created before the import, and to use category ID in the import file to send products to their proper place. At any given time, there are approximately 250-280 categories/subcategories that will not contain products. Which categories may be empty changes on a weekly basis also.

Is there an easy way to unpublish these empty categories without having to manually do this every several days?
