where could i read about manufacturers?

There is not much to read about it.

Actually here is want you can do with that:
1. manage your manufacturers via the menu Products->Manufacturers
2. assign a product to a manufaturer when you edit a product
3. create products listing for manufacturers (it's like for categories but in the parent category of the menu/module, you need to select a manufacturer).
4. create manufacturers listings (it's like for categories but in the parent category of the menu/module, you need to select the main manufacturer).

There is no option to display the manufacturer on the product page. However, if you don't need to do point 2 or 3, you can create a custom product field via the menu Display->Custom fields and make it a manufacturer dropdown. You will be able to choose the manufacturer on the product edition page and display the selection on the product page:
