Hi,
If you don't have anything in your cart, hikashop will redirect you to
the URL you set in the option "URL where to redirect when cart is
empty" under the tab display of the config. It will display an error
message as well but your template might not support joomla error
messaging system:

I'm able to access the checkout from the canasta menu. No problem on my end on your website on that point.

Ah ok, you mean that you want to set a different itemid when you're on the checkout. You can do that by configuring the option "force menu on the checkout" in the config under the tab display. Otherwise, the checkout use the current menu. Then, you can configure your module(s) of the frontpage to not be displayed on the checkout menu, etc.
