Custom fields that are conditional on user

Hi guys, here is another of my weird requirements.

I have a site that has retail customers and a wholesale customer. The wholesale customer gets orders from the site via an SAP OCI interface (don't panic I have that under control) and require an employee number and cost centre code on each order. That is easily achieved with custom fields of "order" type.

Here is my problem. How can I make these fields compulsory for the wholesale customer (all employees use the same login via the SAP interface so there is only one customer number) but optional or preferably hidden from retail customers?

In the configuration of each custom field you'll find "Access level", where you can limit it to certain user groups only after clicking "Custom". That should do the trick for you.
