Order custom field type

Hello,

I have created a custom field using the order type to capture notes from the customer, but the field is not showing anywhere during the checkout process. I have disabled my template override files, but this has not fixed the issue. What needs to be done to display this field, preferably after the customer has logged in or completed the guest email and address form. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
