Paypal & Stripe payments suddenly stopped working

-- HikaShop version -- : 2.6.4
-- Joomla version -- : 3.6.2
-- PHP version -- : 5.5.38
-- Browser(s) name and version -- : Chrome

This site suddenly started having issues that did not exists the day prior. Nothing has changed other than an updated SSL certificate in the last 48 hours. Basically, what is happening is the customer goes through the checkout process and when choosing either payment type, stripe or paypal, the browser just sort of spins and then eventually takes you back to the start of the check out process. In the mean time an order is created int he backend with an order status of "created". I checked the php error logs and turned on error reporting, and nothing.

EDIT: Here are the errors from Joomla's error log, not sure if they are relevant

I ran a tail on the Apache error log while going through the checkout process, and am seeing this...

Hi,

I try to made a test purchase in your website but I can't register.
The account creation take a lot of time but at the end, it gave me the same page and there is account create (and no email received).

If you have issues with emails ; it could explained why the order is not fully created and the user is not redirected to the payment.

It would appear there is a problem with my SMTP configuration/restrictions on my server. Not sure what it is yet, but when I switched the mail settings in Joomla to use the PHP mailer everything is working again.
