How can I create a gift purchase

I want a visitor to be able to purchase a product as a gift for someone else. How do I set up giver and receiver info? I want the receiver to be able to have privileged access to the site, so the receiver needs to be registered. That can be done after he gets notification that a gift has been made.
So the giver shouldn't need to register, but should get confirmation of his purchase.
The receiver should get notification of the gift and a link to register ( you can only register if you make a purchase or a puchase was made on your behalf, like a gift)..
Can someone walk me through this?
