Hello again,
I have searched the forum and read the documentation again and again. And, as in the past, the documentation doesn't address simple tasks the user wants to accomplish, in the form of a tutorial.
That said, it's still my favorite e-commerce system.
My problem is this.
I have one product.
It needs to have multiple variants.
Each variant needs to have a unique price.
So, under characteristics, I created my variants.
In the product, I assigned the variants.
Then, I managed variants.
I set the individual price.
I saved.
Nothing in the CP tells me that the changes worked.
In the CP, the variants don't show a price, even though I set one.
There is no correlation between the variants and what I see on screen when I "manage variants."
For example, I created a variant called "22ft."
When I "manage variants," it's not there.
But a lot of other stuff is.
Every time I click "manage variants," more stuff gets added to the "manage variants" screen. Even though I didn't add anything.
What I am seeing in the CP doesn't make intuitive sense to me.
So please, for the benefit of other users, walk me through the process of creating a variant, adding it to a product and setting a seprate price which users in the front end can toggle.
It would be greatly appreciated by me and by others.
Best,
-Jim Gribble

I think the key is adding values to the variants. I see that price can be assigned to a value of a variant. And I can create as many values as I want, each with a separate price. Am I on the right track? But, why can't I see the uniques prices in the product screen? I CAN see the variant with all the default values which can be toggled through.

Hi,

The product edition page will be completely redone in the next few months in order to make it easier to edit products and especially the characteristics area.

When you create a characteristic, you can add values to it. You should add all the values you'll need for all your products for that characteristic at that point. And only then add it to the products. Then, when you click on the "manage variants" button, it will generate all the variants and you'll see them and be able to remove the ones you don't need and modify the others.
That's basically what we explain in the documentation regarding the characteristics.
If you add a value to a characteristic while you already have added the characteristic to the products, that won't add the variant corresponding to the value in all of the products. You'll have to manually click on the "new" button of the "manage variants" listing of each product to add the new variant. That's probably the case that you faced.

Once the price is set in each variant of the product, there is nothing else to do. The price will update automatically on the product page. If that's not the case, it means that some of the product page views were modified incorrectly, breaking the characteristics data refreshing system. You can check that by renaming the folder templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/html/com_hikashop/product to something else via FTP. After doing that, if you refresh the product page, you should have the characteristics system working as it removed all the customizations of the product views.

Thanks Nicholas, it it what I figured out on my own through trial and error and reading documentation. What I couldn't figure out was, why when I managed variants were all these new values being added. So I did as you suggested and everything seems fine right now. I will test the system today and may have another quick questions.
Much appreciated,
-Jim Gribble.

Just want to thank you for your help. You got me on the right track and I figured it out from there. I guess part of ,my confusion was due to how functions are labeled hierarchically. That's always a challenge for the builders of complex software like this. It does work quite well once you understand the language of the system so to speak. While your documentation is certainly superior to most of the other examples I've read, I still suggest that you publish some simple step-by-step tutorials for users like me who are attempting really complicated tasks beyond simply publishing a product and assigning it a price.
Thanks again, as always,
-Jim G

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback.
We actually have tutorials and are writing more every month.
Batter than having tutorials is to simplify the interfaces and that's what we're going to work a lot on in 2015. We have the new product edition interface that is waiting to be integrated and we started the work on a new checkout (slicker, easier to setup, easier to customize, and easier to use). We'll also work on improving all the interfaces of the backend in a few weeks/months.
By simplifying the interfaces, we hope to reduce the need for documentation which is even better than better documentation (which we will still improve)

This is great news. The app already has come a long ways since I first used it several years ago. I consider it a must for any site that sells goods or services. Keep up the good work and thanks again from a loyal customer.

Hi Guys,
I did not really see much sense in opening a new thread because I just need to be pointed to a solution that I am beginning to think might not exist. Is it possible to have a product.

eg. Shoe Price $ 200.00
Gold color $ 100.00 variable
Gem Stones $ 80.00 variable
Gold Studs $ 90.00 variable

This way client can pick and choose what to or not to add to a particular product.
Thank you so much for your undying support.

Hi,

That sure is possible. You can create a characteristic with 4 values, associate it with your product, and via the "manage variants" button, you can edit each variant and enter its price.
Here is a more complete documentation on that:

And here is an example:
