Native Joomla tagging

Just been discussing the implementation of native Joomla tagging within the multivendor component with Jerome...

www.hikashop.com/forum/23-market-how-to/...uct-tags.html#119957

It appears that before this can happen it needs to be implemented within the Hikashop component first.

I am very keen to implement a native tagging solution into multivendor so that vendors can add tags for submitted products. My reason for doing this is that I have simple category definitions and do not want to give permissions to create categories to the vendors. Therefore tagging would be a great way for users to be able to find products.

Is there any current timeline for integration of Joomla tagging?

If there is an opportunity to assist in this I am happy to help.

Hi,

We actually have that feature on our todo list since a few months. However, the current API of the tagging system is not stable enough yet (it broke several extensions integrating with it with the last update of Joomla 3.1) so we're still waiting a bit before we can integrate HikaShop with it.
So it will come, but not before a few months in the current state.

Thanks Nicolas.

If you want an Aplha or Beta tester, let me know. I'm very early on in the development of my site and can help you to debug / develop if required.

I would like that feature too.

I guess with Joomla 3.2 you'll have your green light to make your adjustments, Nicholas. ;)

Hi,

Yes, with Joomla 3.2 we should have a stable API.

Ooooh.

3.2 is slated for release this month. Does that mean we can look forward to tagging in the next release?

Hi,

In the next release it will be complicated because we already have our feature list completed.
But it will means that it will be possible for us to allow somebody on this task, to make new research on "how implement the tag system into HikaShop".
We have a compatibility with Joomla 1.5, 2.5 and 3.x, it means that we can't integrate the tag system like explain in the official documentation. There are some things that we can't use because it does not exists in Joomla 1.5 so, it will be a big development and a nice challenged.

Yes I agree. It seems easy enough for Joomla 3 due to the native tagging, but not so easy for previous versions of Joomla as there is no core tagging functionality.

Obviously a big decision to make on how to implement tagging across versions, or perhaps even IF to impliment it across versions.

I personally would definitely implement tagging for J3 versions utilising the core joomla tagging. (I am biased of course being a J3 user for this particular project ;) ) Custom writing tagging functionality when core functionality already exists seems to be a bit daft.

Once happy you could look at retrospectively back-porting the native J3 tagging to 2.5 as a plugin using the standard joomla 3 code and database schema as a starting point (the work is already half done.). This is less work than scratch writing a custom tagging implementation and much better for forward compatibility as both versions could then utilise the same code.

The other option is to only implement it for the J3 version. I think that it is fair play to implement new core features for new platform versions - this is normal product development. (just look at iOs / Android / PHP / Javascript / HTML / etc) Earlier J2.5 users always have the option of upgrading to 3 if they really must have tagging.

Backwards compatibility in this case is very very easy for you to support as there is none.

I am actually a little surprised that you are still developing for 1.5 as Joomla dropped support for it last year. It's no longer a current product. Unless you have a large paying 1.5 customer base it seems like a waste of resources to me - both for development and support.

my 02c ;)

Hi,

The tag feature will just be for Joomla 3.
We won't include any fallback for Joomla 2.5 or 1.5. Too complicated.

There is still people under Joomla 1.5 and we will keep the compatibility as long as possible.
We removed the PHP4 compatibility for our new products and some new features in HikaShop are not compatible with PHP4.

We don't want to push users to still have the latest Joomla version. Some times they have a working website and don't want to have to rebuild it from the beginning.

I think that is a wise move

Fair play to you, good to keep support if you can manage it. From what I have seen so far with your support here is that you are on top of things so I guess that you are not under resourced. (unlike myself who always seems to need at least 48 hours in a day)

Very keen to get involved with tagging and in a perfect position to do some testing so give me a holler if you need a guinea pig ;)
