Filters not working when more than one

I was under the impression that the filters, if used in multiples, could be dynamic and therefore if there were four on the page, a viewer could use one or all of them to find product. I have four simple filters in a module on the sidebar of a page, and when all four are used they do bring up a product. But if I only decide to use one of them, or two of them, or three of them, no products come up. I have "dynamic display" set to YES on all the filters. I don't know what to do. This was the one reason that I am using Hikashop over E-Shop because the client strictly needs this type of filtering and no other store has it.
