Custom Fields and Filter not in alphabet order

If i make a custom field with multiple choices, the choices are in order inputted
there is no way to reorder them. this would be OK, if there were a couple of choices.
but if you have a long list of features, it becomes horrible.
We make jewelry, we need a sortable list of the jewels and stones the product is made of.
this could be dozens of names, like citrine, diamond, amber, etc etc.. If we have to add a new item to the list we would have to effectively rekey every entry to get it in order.

is there an easier way to do this.

i did do a search and totally did not see that. Hopefully it will get fixed soon.
