Fill filter values for custom fields automatically

I have a question on building filters in combination with custom fields.
I have created 3 custom fields, and now I want to create filters.
My first custom field can contain 6 values which I can overcome putting as selectable values
Second custom field can contain around 44 values
Third custom field 209 values........

Based on the filters on the first two fields, the third field options will become less of course.

Is there a way that the values that are available to the search, are selected from the actual values filled in the products custom field ?
Or should I really create the possiblities manually ? (Or write a quick sql script to update the database directly...)

I noticed that, but that does not work if you have the custom field set to 'text'.
So I still needed to add the values to the custom field when setting it to something other then "text".
