Dynamic Product Characteristics or Variants

I am hoping you can give me advice as to whether there is a better way I can set up my products?

At the moment, I have a product category set up which I called 'Variants' This contains 3 'products' - size, colour and item type. Within these three products, I have set up characteristics of the options available to the customer. I then add these to my main product so that it creates three drop down options for the customer to select from when making a purchase. You should be able to see from the attached screenshots what I mean.

This works okay when all items I sell are available in all colours and all sizes. BUT, unfortunately that's not the case, and as my range grows, this system is getting more and more complicated. What I really need to do is set my products up with a more dynamic system. For example, when the customer chooses a Hoodie, I would like them to then be offered only the size and colour choices available for a hoodie. If you look at this other t-shirt website ( sictees.com.au/store/atari.html ) you can see what I mean. This is how I would like my products to react.

Can you tell me if I can achieve this with hiksahop or if there is any other way I can come close to setting up this type of system? I would be more than happy to pay a coder to do this for me, if there is no way to manipulate the current business edition. Hikashop is actually holding my business back now because I am unable to sell the products I want to, because it's just too complicated to try and list them.

Any advice anyone could give me would be very much appreciated.

Thanks so much.

Then why not directly use the color and size characteristics in your main products instead of adding them to option products and then adding the option products to your products as options ?
That way, you can set the available variants for them on a per product basis instead of having to create different option products for different products.

Because that would mean that every time there is any change to my product range (e.g. a colour is discontinued, or jumpers are added for the winter months) I would have to change over 400 products individually to make the adjustments. That's just not a sensible solution.

Note that the easiest way to manage your 400 products, will be to export them through a CSV file, edit that CSV file, and importing it back.
