Custom fields - Dropdown

My drop down has the following options:

Year 4
Year 5
Year 6
etc

It would like the field to display "Choose one.."

I have tried setting up a blank option with "Choose one" as the label but as it is a required field, it will not let me set this as default.

Showing me some screenshots of what you exactly want to do will probably help me to understand .

The dropdown fields, "How did you hear about these labs?" and "School Year" default to the first option.

I would like these in effect to be blank so that the visitor needs to make a selection choice i.e. not simply skip over using the defaults. Even better if instead of blank they could display "Choose one..."

In the custom field parameters, you have to add a value like "Choose one..." set "disabled" to "Yes" and set it as the default value. To be sure that something will be selected you have to enable the option "Required".
