Product contact not working

If you go to the Product contact page for any product, complete the form and recaptcha. Then send nothing happens - the progress icon simply keeps spinning. This happens on all the product contact pages.
We did recently update Hikashop and the PHP - however we are not 100% sure if the issue occurred after this.
One thing I did notice is the field in Hikashop - configuration - emails - contact request email address was originally "greyed" out although it had the address This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in the field. When I retyped it in and saved it, it was no longer greyed out.
However the Product Contact form still behaves in the same manner.

We have tested to the email address (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) direct and it works fine.
We tested to the email via Joomla's email test and it works fine.
The email address is used by hikashop order admin emails and payment notification and works fine.

I tried an alternative destination address - but this also does not work. Same result.

Nothing out standing shows in the server error logs.

However is it possible to have recapctha added to the product enquiry form via hikashops recapctha?
