Im trying to find a solution to a problem i have - any advice or suggestion greatly appreciated.

I have a site with 10,000 products - 95% of the products have identical characteristic / values - i achieved this by applying a template product during import. and imported in batch's - I'm very happy with the result and workflow

recently my client changed prices - that was fine i achieved this using mass actions.

PROBLEM

now my client has decided to change the value names eg. from "Photograph 24x30cm" to "Mounted Photograph (Australia & NZ only) 24x30cm"

can Mass actions change the name of a value?? - HOW?

in addition to this my client has asked me to introduce a 4 more values to every product (10,000) \. Can Mass action add values to characteristics?? - How?

Id appreciate any advice or suggestion.

This is such a beautiful component to work with and support has been exceptional.

thanks
Ian

Hi,

You can change the name directly via the menu Products > Characteristics.

To add new values, you can use the mass actions if the variants have the same price than the main product.
If they have different price, it will be more difficult.

So if it is the same price, you can create a mass action to remove the desired characteristic, and then use an action to add the characteristic with the new values.

Add limits, else with 10000 products the server will not support the charge.
And don't forget to make backups before anything ;)

Hi,

So it will be a little bit more complex.

A solution could be to export the current products into a csv file.
Then remove the characteristic, add values and add back the characteristic to the product.
Export the new csv file with all the new entries, and edit the csv file to set the correct price data.

Import the csv file.

Thanks Xavier
I had a go at this method
The result was losing art my product images!

I'm sure this was my error

These were my steps
Selected a category of products - total 333
Exported to csv
Find and replace variable name
Uploaded to hikashop

Result = no images and no change despite find and replace in csv?

Any suggestion as to what I did wrong?

When using this method, I recommend to let only the useful columns in the csv file.
This way the processing is lighter, and it will not update incorrectly other values.

By "the variable name" you are talking about the characteristic values name, right ?
If it is, you have to edit this value via the backend interface.
Then export, and edit the csv file, when importing back you can potentially let only the product_id and price value columns.

Hi xavier - thanks for your replies

I have used mass action to delete all characteristics from a test category in the store - this worked - when viewed all products are free!
i then used the original CSV used to import the products originally and apply the new pricing structure - green light

when a product in the test category is published - the new characteristic is present - yippee!

174.132.121.226/~richardt/index.php/hika...-ariel-5487-sh13-jpg

HOWEVER - the pricing does not seem to have been as successful - all values of the characteristic are the same price

the CSV details the pricing - but for some reason there is no price change
its the same method i used to populate the original 11000 products and it was flawless so im not sure whats happened this time

i have included the csv for you to take a peek

hope you can help

thanks

Hi Xavier - i had to move quickly on this and dont want to waste your time

the link below is no longer current

The only way i could get this to work was to delete the products and re-upload them via CSV

thanks for your time
