That's normal. The PayPal Express checkout payment method doesn't appear as a normal payment method but displays a button on your cart (you need to activate the corresponding option of the payment method for that).
If you just want that payment method and not others, you actually don't want the "payment" view at all in your checkout workflow.

Thank you for the information though it's not what I was hoping for. Not really a fan of the button, use PayPal for everything else online but need folks to be able to pay without creating a PayPal account.

I'll check out the other payment options but want to thank you again for the great component and outstanding support!

Does PayPal Pro have similar restrictions (must use a button instead of the normal work flow)?

The PayPal Express Checkout system purpose is to have that button.
If you don't want the button but the normal paypal mode, then why not use PayPal standard like you had before ? That's what it is for. PayPal standard doesn't require the customers to create a PayPal account if you have a PayPal Business account with the corresponding option activated to not force the customers to create an account.

PayPal Pro is again another payment system of PayPal. The credit card info is collected directly on the checkout and the payment happens without the customer seeing any PayPal page. It's however only available for the USA, UK and Canada and require a SSL certificate on your website.

I understand your reasoning for the PayPal Express button standard PayPal doesn't support mobile (displays a desktop form).

PayPal Express on the other hand can detect a mobile device (most of the time) and display a mobile friendly checkout.

This is a very critical difference if you are are doing a mobile or a responsive design.

I have a client right now that wants to offer PayPal along side credit cards via First Data (Authorize.Net plugin).
The site is responsive and works great, First Data's gateway has a "mobile" detection/payment form too.

The problem is PayPal standard gives you a desktop form which is impossible to read much less fill out.

Ideally I want to use Express (vs. Standard) but I would like it to display only on cart view and/or Payment view in the workflow.

However what I have found (at least with version 2.3.0 Business) is If I set just "Display Express Checkout button on checkout view" I see the french PayPal button (still trying to figure out where to set this). Which is good as the normal checkout workflow continues to function as normal.

However, if I turn on "Display Express Checkout button on cart view" it breaks (or disables) the rest of the checkout workflow. I'm not sure why one doesn't break it and other does - Is there a logic behind this?

I could live with the PayPal Express button being present throughout the checkout flow but not it breaking it.

Regardless - the mobile / resposnive design is something you should consider as I believe Express and Pro are the only options for supporting those smaller screens.

I'm not sure what you want us to consider regarding responsive design ?
HikaShop is already responsive. We cannot ask PayPal to change their PayPal Standard form to be responsive (we can but they'll just ignore us).
If you want a responsive payment gateway with HikaShop, that's already possible. Just use one which supports that.

Now regarding PayPal Express Checkout. The goal of the Express Checkout gateway of PayPal is to skip the checkout on your website so that you only see the PayPal checkout page and HikaShop then takes the information that you entered in the PayPal Express Checkout and adds it to your order on the website after the payment.
With other payment gateways, the process is different: The checkout is handled by HikaShop and it's HikaShop which sends the information of the order to the payment gateway.
So normally, when you use the Express Checkout, you want to but the button right at the beginning of the checkout or even in the cart module so that your customers can skip the normal checkout of HikaShop and directly go through PayPal's Express Checkout.
If you put the button at the end of the HikaShop checkout, it defeats the purpose of the payment gateway.

If you want a responsive payment method with PayPal, I would recommend to look at PayPal Advanced (yes, they have a dozen of different gateways, each time with a different API...). We just finished developing a payment plugin for it and it will be included in next version of HikaShop, in May.

I thought it was worth noting that PayPal Express is mobile/responsive ready and that could be a deciding factor as why you would want to use it over PayPal Standard if your HikaShops was responsive.

I understand the logic about why the Express button/payment is displayed up front.

But the site I'm working on the HikaShop's PayPal Express plugin won't let you use other payment plugins if I turn on "Display Express Checkout button on cart view". When I do that, it breaks (or disables?) the rest of the checkout workflow.

So if a customer decided NOT to use PayPal Express use the normal checkout workflow, it just displays a empty page. It won't let me continue on to the login (the next step in my workflow) and ultimately use First Data (via the Authorize.net Plugin).

See new.pooltablefeltcloth.com/ .

Note that First Data is a responsive payment gateway.

Knowing you are adding PayPal Advanced helps a little as I use Advanced with responsive WordPress sites with another cart which works great. But Advanced still requires you to upgrade to a paid PayPal account where as PayPal Express doesn't.

Ideally all clients would upgrade to PayPal Pro or Advanced, but my established e-commerce clients are still just adding PayPal as a secondary option. They don't want to commit to PayPal alone yet.

Never mind on the blank page thing.

Not sure what I did exactly, but I got it stop going to a blank page if you clicked "next".

It now allows me to do the regular checkout workflow.
