Credit card number required message

We are using the authorize.net plugin (but that probably doesn't matter). If the user doesn't enter a credit card number and presses next in the order process, they are not prompted for a credit card number. The only template override we have for the checkout process is login_form.php and just to remove some <br/>s.

Where to look here?

Can you give me more information about your issue and of how you configured your Authorize.net through some screenshots so that I can also know which Authorize.net API you're using ?
