Adding Options

Hi there,

I currently have a florist shop with flowers separated into two categories, and consequently displayed using two different menus. Each bouquet has several variants - e.g. size. I would like to add the ability to allow customers to optionally select selection "chocolates" or "wine" etc, when they choose the bouquet.

Reading around, it looks like I need to:
- create a new "chocolate" product and, say, assign it to a "misc" category
- then for each of the bouquet products, add "chocolate" as an option
- then repeat for wine etc.

Questions:

  • Is the above simple process what I need?
  • When using options, will the default configuration allow for the 'extra' product to be completely 'optional' (so the user doesn't have to select it. Like a bolt on option ?). Or would I need to make other changes?
  • Do I have to manually add these options to each of the bouquets, or is there a way to add these options to a given category. I.e. all items with a "bouquet" category, should include the options x, y, z?
  • Finally, are the options shown as an additional cost I.e. chocolate +£3.00

Looking to get a good overview of how this would work, before I start making changes to the site.

Many thanks for your help,
Marc

Hi,

1. You could do it like that. But you could also have only one product with a characteristic with three values (no addition, wine and chocolate) and then add that product as option to the otherproducts. That way, you would get an option dropdown with three choices where the customer can select which of the three he wants for his product. And you could also have only two values in your product option and change the "Product selection method" setting in the configuration to "checkbox". That way, you would have one option with two checkboxes that the user could tic to add the wine and / or the chocolate to the main product.

2. If you add a product without characteristics to another product as an option, the system will automatically display it as a yes/no defaulting to no. So the option will be optionnal.

3. The options have to be added to the products, not to categories. However, in the System>Mass actions menu, you can create a mass action, add a filter on the category, and an action to add the option to the products and when you process the mass action, it will add the option to all the products of that category.

4. Yes, they are shown as additional costs to the products. You can see an example here:
