settings for display of sub-menu ignored

My Main Products menu is set to display products as a table which is what i want for nearly all products. One of my sub-menus under Products is set to display Product Options as div/grid. This setting is ignored. My understanding was that this type of setting should be recognised. can you point me to some reading on this or explain further please.
