I am having the most challenging time making Hikashop a multilanguage shop.

On your page, www.hikashop.com/download/languages#translate , you list 3 options to do this. I have tried to do #3 but I could not get it to work. Click on the "Activate the edition of content in multiple languages" and then use the translation interface provided all around Hikashop's backend does not give enough information at all!

Now I feel like I have combined both #1 on your list and #3. I have created 2 separate menus - one in English and one in French. I am sure I was not supposed to do this for the 3rd option but did not know what else to do. I am totally confused on how to get my menus to show in French, let alone the ability to add items to a shopping cart to purchase.

Could someone please help me with this?

From your guide

1. You can create several category trees (one per language), duplicate your products for each category tree and create different Joomla menu items attached to the different category trees' main category.
The cons are that it requires a lot of management work if you have a lot of products and you can't handle the stock management across the different languages for your products. If you don't need to manage the stock of your products and have only a few products, it's however a solution.

3. You can just activate the "Activate the edition of content in multiple languages" setting of your HikaShop configuration (after your configured the languages for Joomla) and then use the translation interface provided all around HikaShop's backend. The method is simple, efficient and the one we would recommend. However, as it uses translation overrides, this can lead to conflicts with texts from different areas sharing the same translation. So if you have a lot of content to translate. We recommend that you understand the translation override system as explained below as you will probably have to use it at some point.

Hi,

1. After you activate the "Activate the edition of content in multiple languages" setting, and supposing that you can already translate Joomla articles in several languages, when you edit products / categories / etc in HikaShop, you'll have a flag for each language, and when clicking on the flag, you'll be able to change the text for each language. For example, on a product edit form on our demo website:

You can see the flags below the "published" setting.

2. Having menu items in several languages indeed require to duplicate them, one per language, and associate them.
It's the same whether they are Joomla article menu items or HikaShop products / categories listings.
I checked your website, and I can see that you already did this for the store menu item. And I can see that when I click on a category of the categories listing, I end up on an invalid link. I suppose it's something linked to SEF URLs and canonical URLs.
The link that should be eastwestholisticmedicine.com/fr/boutique/category/12-ebooks ends up being eastwestholisticmedicine.com/category/12-ebooks for some reason.
I would need to check your settings to be able to see what is going on for that to happen in order to tell you what you're missing.

Note that when I access the checkout from the english side of your shop, I got an error after the first step of the checkout:

It seems to be linked to your template. I would recommend to check with your template provider.

Hi,

If I check your translation files under the Languages tab of the HikaShop configuration, the "overrid" area on the right side doesn't contain your translations.
This means that HikaShop found Falang on your website and stored the translations in Falang. However, I don't see Falang available in your bckend.
So I suppose that you must have removed it at some point.
So I understand you're frustration with the translation since you're adding stuff in the translation interface but you don't see it taken into account on the frontend since Falang is not available.
If you're not using Falang, you should delete the table falang_content in your database via your PHPMyAdmin.
Then, try again to use the translation interfaces in HikaShop's backend and you'll see that what you translate now appears on the frontend.

  1. I deleted the table falang_content in mydatabase via your PHPMyAdmin
  2. I added all the translations.

It is still not finding the categories. I am not sure what to do.

Sorry for this return but what do you mean by you didn't find the categories ?... Do you mean Item Menu (English & French), you can find them in Menus dropdown, see my screenshot :

I meant when I am in the French shop/boutique, when I click on a product, it says it cannot find it.

When I look at the url, it still shows the English version. It appears that it doesn't find the French categories.

My apologies for not explaining this well.

You have to set your canonical url (in French) in order to create the link, and navigate through your different page (English & French).
I have let the configuration shown on my screenshot, and so, you can see that this work now.

Ugh! This still not working!

I have tried multiple setups

  1. canonical URLs on the category listing, and produce
  2. canonical URLs on the category only
  3. different combinations of the URL that follow the English syntax.

I finally resolved it by adding the ID. That was missing from your picture. I just wanted to add that in case someone else has this issue.

Problem
Now I have the category problem fixed, I still cannot get the product to show. I am working on the Jing ebook so if you could help me with that one, I can figure out the rest....hopefully!

Hi,

The problem is that you've entered an invalid URL in the "canonical URL" setting of the French language popup.
You've entered /boutique/produits/1-jing-ebook but the correct URL is /boutique/product/1-jing-ebook

If you're not sure what URL to enter for the canonical URLs of your products, you could leave these canonical URL fields empty in the products. Then, HikaShop will dynamically generate the URL of the products and it will work.
That's actually a good way to know which URL to use in the "canonical URL" field. Once you emptied the canonical URL fields, you can either leave them empty, or copy/paste the URL generated by HikaShop on the frontend for each language, in the canonical URL field of the product for each language. But at first, I would recommend to just leave it empty, it will be easier for you.

I have resolved the problem. I thought I needed to put the French version of the word "product" in the URL.

Just so you know though, Hikashop did not automatically generate the URLs. I had to manually put them in there. When I left them blank, I would get an error in the shop. It would say product not found.

I still have to test the checkout but hopefully all will go well.
