Custom field display question

I have added custom fields (item) to a product. Under the custom fields display options should I set all of them to yes if I want the custom fields to be shown in each instance? For example, I want the custom field displayed with the product on the invoice, front-end order details, etc. I am unclear if the custom fields will always display with the product or if each needs to be set separately.
