Advanced shipping methods

Hi,
The store is working great at educationlaw.org. I just have a few questions about shipping methods.
1. This client has a complex schedule of shipping fees based on subtotal ranges. And the ranges apply only to North America (U.S. and Canada). The client's shipping methods fee schedule is attached. Also attached is a screen shot of how I set up Hikashop to match. When I turn them on the Hikashop shipping methods, I believe the cart will automatically apply the right one at checkout based on subtotal. Correct?
2. I haven't figured out how to do the following: For purchases outside North America, the client wants to add a $35% surcharge to the cart subtotal. Is that possible to set up automatically? If not, what would be a reasonable manual solution, since these sales happen only rarely? Can this be done by zip code such that all overseas zip codes are charged an additional 35%?
3. The client also sells e-books, which I want to except from shipping charges. How? I see forum traffic indicating that I should be able to set the shipping price to zero in the product page. There is no place to do this in my version even though it's the latest version bought just a couple months ago. Or is there a new version that does allow me to override shipping methods at the product level?
Many thanks,
-JG

Hi,

1. yes.

2. You can create first a shipping zone via the menu System>Zones and add all the countries except USA and Canada as subzones of that shipping zone. Then, create a new manual shipping method for that zone with a percentage of 35.

3. Simply do not set a weight in your ebooks and set a weight for the other products and then turn off the option "force shipping regardless of weight" in the configuration.

Regarding #3, are the settings in the attached correct? Regarding #2, in your next version, will shipping methods be able to be applied by category? So much faster and easier.
Thanks again,
-JG

All hard goods are now assigned a weight of 1 lb. All digital products are assigned a weight of zero kg. So they will be exempt from shipping?

Thank you. All is working. One question:
I successfully created a zone called overseas shipping. I added all countries by toggling to select all. I deselected Canada and the United States. I Saved. But, Canada and the United States still were saved along with all the rest. Even though I didn't select them. I found that I had to unpublish them for this work. So, is there something wrong with the select system? Did I go about it wrong?

You should not unpbulish them or you won't be able to use them.
Just make sure that they are not in the sub zones list of your overseas shipping and if they are, delete them from it.

All shipping methods work great except for "overseas shipping."
To recap:
The customer wants to add 35% of subtotal for books shipped outside the U.S. and Canada.
I have shipping charge schedule set up and applied to all users with a country address of U.S. or Canada. Works great.
I created another shipping method called "overseas shipping."
I applied a surcharge of 35%.
I created a zone called "overseas shipping."
I configured it as "shipping zone." (not country)
From the country list, I deleted U.S. and Canada; then saved.
Back in the "overseas shipping" shipping method, I set my zone to "overseas shipping."
This charge all non-U.S/Canadian customers another 35%.
And darn it, everybody is being charged the extra 35%! Even me.
I've checked the "overseas shipping" zone. Yes, it includes all countries outside the U.S. and Canada.
Did I miss another step in doing all this?

Hi,

If everyone can select the overseas shipping method it means that the method (or the zones, or the custom fields) is not configured properly.
I don't have enough information to say precisely what is the issue but you're definitely missing something somewhere that you didn't mention in your post.

Please provide a backend access, it will be easier than doing tens of screenshots in order to check all your settings.

I check your settings and your checkout and everything is ok.
When I use an overseas address, the overseas shipping method is used, and when I use a US address, the domestic shipping method is used.
See here:

In your message, you talked about having the 35% as an extra on top of the domestic shipping charges.
In that case, you will have to create one overseas shipping method per domestic shipping method and configure each the same expect for the zone restriction (of course!) and the percentage field where you can add the 35% fee for each overseas shipping method.

I am worried that it still is not working, because when I make a purchase I am still being charged overseas shipping. I have a U.S. address. My screen shot is attached. Why would my U.S. address be charged overseas shipping when yours was not? Because of this strange variation, I disabled the overseas shipping method again. Meanwhile, I will continue to try to understand your suggestion about more shipping methods.
You are welcome to log in and go to checkout as me. I sent you the info via e-mail.
Thanks,
-Jim Gribble

You didn't give the address you used in your test so I can't reproduce. You can see in my screenshot the address I used, and it's working fine for it.

It does seem to be working, and I puzzled out how to achieve my goal relative to overseas shipping.
Here's what I did.
I created a new zone called "overseas shipping." I added all countries except U.S. and Canada.
I duplicated the five domestic shipping methods which charge shipping by flat free based on five escalating subtotal ranges.
I renamed each of these copies "overseas shipping" and toggled the zone to "overseas shipping."
To each of the five new "overseas shipping" methods I added 35% in addition to the flat domestic fee for each subtotal range.
Now, say, when someone outside North America makes a purchase of $91.75, two things happen:
First, $9.65 is charged because that's the standard flat domestic shipping fee for purchase totals ranging from $50-$99.99.
Second, an additional 35% of $91.75 is charged.
Voila! I think.

Hi,

No you don't. The shipping plugins are the same in all the HikaShop editions.
