Customizing Display->Views

Hi,

I'd like to understand how customization of views work. When I modify a file in the Views editor, and save it, all my changes disappear, although I get the Remove Customization button next to the file I've modified. Why don't I see what's been changed? Where can I see my changes?

Thank you.

Hi,

You should see your changes once you saved them. If not, it means that there is a problem somewhere. It often comes from permission issues on the folder templates/YOUR_TEMPLATE/html or its subfolders.

Thank you for your reply.

I have checked permissions on the folder - they are all fine. Once I save any change through the Display->Views editor, I can see a file is being created in a appropriate folder. However no changes are being saved. Also, no errors are being displayed. I am really puzzled... Any other suggestions?

Does the file in the override folder of the template have something in it (the modified code ? the original ? nothing ?) ?
You could of course directly modify the file int he override folder via FTP but it should work via the interface...

The new file has the original code, no changes are being saved.

I really would like to utilize this functionality because every time I upgrade hikashop I spend lots of time replicating changes I made directly in the code in a new version. I have been making changes directly in the code because this functionality never worked for me.

As I said in my previous message, you can do your modifications directly the file in the OVERRIDE folder via FTP, and not directly in the original files.
That way you don't loose your modifications when you update.

You actually don't need the interface to use the override system. We made it just to simplify the edition for people you don't know how the override system works, that's all.

What version of joomla are you using ? If you ahve the code mirror editor published on your website, could you try to unpublish it and see if that solves the problem ?

I run Joomla 1.6.0. Disabling the CodeMirror editor plugin fixed the issue. The system can now save changes.

Thank you for your help!

If you don't mind, could you explain how any customization is preserved when running an upgrade. If for example a new version contains some changes in a code file which I have customized as well, how would the two changes be merged?

The changes are not merged. It's not technically possible to merge file changes.
The system will continue to use your modified version while the original will be updated.
We always try to keep backward compatibility so that you don't get errors when updating, however, if new functionalities are added to the views, you won't be able to use them with your modified version.
