Problems uploading product images

I am still having problems uploading updated product images and I cannot think of an explanation of what I am seeing, it is so odd.

Here are the steps I use to upload an image for a variant and what I see, not always, but often enough to be a problem.

Starting on the Main Information page of the variant:
1. An image entry will be shown but no thumbnail, I delete this.
2. Click Add
3. Select the image from my hard drive, enter the name and press OK
4. The name shows and the line height expands as if to show the image but there is no thumbnail
5. Click Save. When the process is working, the thumbnail shows. But very often, no thumbnail shows and the line height is reduced to the no-thumbnail height
6. Repeat steps 2,3,4. Now two thumbnails show!
7. Delete the older entry and save. Sometimes the thumbnail shows, sometimes not. If not repeat 1-7 until it does!!

Any thoughts?

I have checked the front end and when I did I found that if the thumbnail was not shown on the backend, it was not on the front end.

I'm using Joomla 1.7 and usually Chrome.

I just tried to reproduce the problem with Safari and so far, I have not been able to reproduce the problem. I also just changed my graphics card to a much faster one. Could the problem be browser/graphics card related?

I have also had some similar issues. When I add an image to the product and hit save the image disappears. If I go back and try again, I get two images. On the front end in the Product Listing view, I see only the one image. I then click on the product and I have the one main image but also a duplicate of the same image like in the administration panel. I then delete one of the images in the administration panel and it deletes both images and the front end goes back to the bar code image.

I am using Joomla 2.5.6 and the latest Hikashop components. Once and if I get this all straight with the minor issues I have, I plan on upgrading but not until I can make sure Hikashop is going to work correctly. I have spent a lot on VirtuMart and have wasted a lot of money trying different ways to resolve the issue.
