Shipping options in dropdown or lightbox

Is there any way to put the shipping options during checkout in a lightbox,dropdown menu, or slider so it dosn't take up so much space? What would it take to get the option to put the list in a compressed format with no estimated delivery date line or delivery hour line, or else formatted with all three outputs on one line. If this cant be done, what would I need to do to just alter the shipping.php to do this?
