Payment notification issue on delayed payments

The Paypal plugin is working fine for orders that are created and paid for at the time. However, I recently switched in the option to pay for orders at a later date via the user menu and when clients go back in and pay for a previously created order, no payment notification e-mail is generated and, presumably because of this, the order remains as 'created', rather than being changed to 'confirmed'.
Is this a setting in the back end that I have missed?

We don't have that problem on our end.
If you activate the debug option of the paypal plugin, what do you get in the payment logs (tab Files of the configuration) for the payment notification ?
