Product Variant Thumbnails with stock control

I have shoes and the shoe size as a drop down list is fine but I want the color to have thumbnails. I know I can add multiple images tot he product and the user can mouse on them and see the color but I need these color variants to have skus and stock control. So, if the user licks the red one it needs to have the red ones sku loaded then they can pick the size. I know this is something simple but I cant figure out how to this. Any help is appreciated.

Do you want to have the stock control on both the size and the color? or only one of the two ?
The dropdowns which will need stock control and dynamic images and unique SKU should be done as a characteristic:

Otherwise, you should do either an option:

Or a custom item field:
