How to handle different sized images

It looks like the main image is just being resized with CSS and no actual thumbnail file exists.

Yes, the thumbnails should be created on the fly and saved in the folder media/com_hikashop/upload/thumbnails. Do you have that folder ? Maybe HikaShop doesn't have the access rights to access it or write into it, or create it ?

Yes, the folder is there and does contain a few image files for category images that were added through the Hikashop category admin interface, but no product image thumbnails. It seems that when images are uploaded via FTP, the thumbnail creation step is bypassed.

I notice in the category edition screen, the image displayed there is from the upload/thumbnail folder, but for the product edition screen, all images displayed there are from the upload folder. Is that the way it should work, or should those also be displayed from the thumbnail folder?

The thumbnail images should come from the thumbnails folder.

When you upload the images via FTP, it's normal that the thumbnails aren't created automatically. HikaShop doesn't know that you uploaded them. When you import your CSV, the problem is that creating a thumbnail takes too much resources.
So the thumbnails are checked when displaying the images on the front or back end and at that point, they are generated if the thumbnail option is activated and that the thumbnail is missing.

I don't know why the thumbnails wouldn't be created in your case.

Could you provide an FTP access to your website so that we could put some traces on the display of images and understand why the thumbnails might not be created ?

Please let me know when you are finished using the FTP account. I don't want to leave that password active any longer than necessary.

Yes. We're still working on it. We fixed the creation of thumbnails on the fly.

However, there is another problem that we're looking at at the moment preventing the images to be displayed correctly on your website.

The thumbnails seems to display fine now on your main website.
We'll include these modifications in a new version of hikashop that we'll try to do over the weekend (we probably won't change the version number).

Should there be a thumbnail for each uploaded image? I see 801 files in the upload folder but only 423 in upload/thumbnail.

Thanks for you help on this!

They will be created on the fly. So, as long as you don't display the image on a product page, the thumbnail won't be created.

OK - Will you be needing the FTP access any more for now? I can turn it back on if needed in the future.

Thanks again,
Ed

Thaks again for your work on this problem. BTW-I left a nice review on JED primarily due to your attention to detail and dedication to your product. I don't remember ever posting a review of any product on there, but you guys certainly deserve it!

Have a great weekend,
Ed

Thumbnails are generated automatically when the product listing pages are displayed. The only requirement is that the folder media/com_hikashop/upload is writable.
Also, you can have any number of different size of thubmnails generated now as for each products listing menu or module, you can specify a specific image size.

You can change it to 777 yes. That might help.

If the upload folder is writable to auto generation system works all the time.
There is no upload/thumbnail folder since half a year. Now, you will have one folder per thumbnail size, like that for example: upload/thumbnail_120x240
But the best is to let the system do it's thing automatically...
