Massive amounts of variants

Client is wanting to do a lingerie store. characteristics will do the job when it comes to size/cup size/colour, but that just generates hundreds of variants.

It's ok if they do not wish to have stock control etc for standard lines in 3 main colours. But, in the case of special seasonal lines in a single custom colour, there has to be a better way...

Even if there was just one colour, there are 17 bra band sizes and 18 cup sizes (Potentially) Again, that generates a LOT of variants (306). I am sure they would not get every size and cup size variant, so they would have to remove the ones they did not get. But then they would still need to add their stock received so that they cannot oversell a product.

What is the best way of doing this, because this poor woman would go nuts having to "control" so many variants of so many products....

If the person wants to control the stock for all the variants it will indeed require to have lots of them.
Custom fields of the table "item" can be an alternative to characteristics as they don't generate variants, but that only works if you don't want to control the stock based on the field values.
A mix of both is potentially possible also so that only the attributes for which stock is important are made with characteristics while the others use custom item fields.

Finally, if you have hundreds of products with hundred of variants for each one, the best is to manage the stock updates with a CSV import.
The owner can modify the quantity in Excel for each variant pretty easily and then just import the CSV in HikaShop so that it updates all the products quantity.
