limit number of dowloads

I've set Configuration > Files > Download Number Limit to 1. But, I'm still able to download documents as many times as I want. I assumed after downloading once, if I tried again, I'd get a message saying I couldn't do it... I'd really like to limit the download times and numbers. Can you please advise why this might not be working for me?

Thank you!

Hi,

There is several settings for the download limitation.
The configuration value is the "default" value but you can configure the value per file.
Please edit a file product and check the "Download number limit" value.

  • 0: Default parameters for products
  • -1: Unlimited

Thanks for your reply. I tried editing an existing file product and uploading a new file product, but there was no option for limiting the number of downloads on the screen that I get to do these things. I've attached a screenshot, which is what I see when I try to edit or upload a file product. Am I still looking in the wrong place? I appreciate your help!

PS, I'd also like to have a time limit for downloading. Like the download number limit, the download time limit option is under Configuration and doesn't seem to work. Should that time limit option be available for individual product files as well? Thanks!

Hi,

You're in the right place but I don't think that you're using a recent version of HikaShop.
You can look at our demo website, the option is there (and the option is in HikaShop starter to business).

Thanks again Jerome, I updated to the latest version and now the "download number limit" field is there in the product file edit window as you said.

However, I set the limit to "1" in the file edit window (so now it's set to 1 in both places: config. default and individual file) and I can still download as many times as I want. (I downloaded the file 5 times, and in the product window, under Files>Downloads it shows 5/1.)

After the first download, should I be getting a message saying I've reached my limit? Please advise! Thank you!

PS. Although the add/edit file windows are all the same, is there a difference in the way limiting downloads works, depending on whether the file must be paid for or is free of charge?

Hi,

When you edit the product in the back-end: The counter indicates how many times the file has been download, for every orders.
If you open the order in the back-end, the counter would be different.

Customer are limited in the front-end.
The link in his email (or in his front-end order) use the counter for the validation.
The front-end order would not display the link if the limit is reach and even if the customer call the url, he will be block.

Regards,
Jerome

Hi Jerome, I'm sorry, but most of your last answer doesn't make any sense to me.

I've posted a document as a free download (on product page) with a link on the front end of my site. The download number limit is "1" in both the default and individual setting for this document. However, I've can still download this document unlimited times (including after leaving/refreshing the site). I'm not signed in to the back end at all or as an administrator.

I have not tried downloading a "paid for" (versus free) document yet, since changing their download number limit to 1 only. I'm going to conduct a "test buy" and see if these can also be downloaded more than once or not. - But the free one definitely can be.

If the product file is free, then the limitation of download per purchase does not apply since the user does not need to purchase the product to download it.
If your file is not free, the user will have to go through the checkout in order to get the file, even if the product is free, and an order will be created for it, and the user will only be able to download it one for each order if you set the download limit to 1 per order.
