Manage Sold Out Products

When a product is sold out, does it automatically disappear from the front end or do I have to add a quantity for that to happen?

I don't want users ordering a product when there is non available so what is the proper way to ensure that this works correctly.

When you set a product stock, and this stock arrive to 0, then the customer can no more bought the product.

You can test it with a product, just set the quantity to 1, create an order with this product and confirm this order in the backend, and then you will see that the add to cart button has disappeared.

Is there a way to make the product "unpublish" a certain number of days after it's sold out? I would like to do that if possible.

Sure, you should do it through the "Product available from/until" options of your product page.
