Custom Fields and Products

Been digging through forum/docs. Found items close to what I need but not convinced the custom fields feature will work for me. So before I purchase the Business Edition I would like to get a more precise answer to my question.

I need to collect specific information(Message actually) from the purchaser of a product, for EACH product they order(even if same product). A real world example of what I'm trying to do is out there. Let's say my product was a photo album with a space for engraving. Someone buys 3 of these as gifts. I would need to capture a unique "message" for each album at checkout even though they are the same product.

It's not a must have but if I could also limit the number of characters in the "message" that would be icing on the cake.

I apologize for not experimenting before posting. If I can't do this I have no need of the Business Edition so I would like to know that it is possible first.

Hi,

Sure, it's possible and you'll find your solution there :

You have two possibilities:
1. You can create a custom field of the table "order" via the menu Display->Custom fields. The field will appear during the checkout and attached to the order.
2. You can create a custom field of the table "item" via the menu Display->Custom fields. The field will appear on the product page and attached to the product in the cart (and later on to the product in the order).
In both cases, that is only possible with the Business edition. Also, in both cases, the information will be available in the emails and in the order details on the back end.


ps: I think that you can limit your message through the Maximum length option.
