Pause Subscription / Subscription Holiday

Hi there,
I'm setting up a site for a weekly food delivery service using the akeeba subscriptions plugin, and all works fine. But I would like to give my customers a method to pause their subscription, so if they go on holiday for a few weeks they don't get a food delivery and don't get billed. It looks like I can do this manually by changing the order status from Confirmed to Cancelled within Hikashop, and then back again to Completed when the customer returns from holiday.

Two questions:
Will changing the order status in Hikashop actually pause payment with paypal recurring?
Is there a better way of doing this - has anyone come across a customsed version of the module to do this for instance?

Thanks as ever for any help, Gislon

Hi,

The recurring payment won't be paused. there is actually no option to pause the recurring payment in PayPal. The user will have to cancel his subscription via PayPal, the subscription will then go until the end of the period, and he will then have to subscribe again to start a new subscription period.

Thanks Nicolas for speedy response. This is a problem for us. All our competitors offer the ability to pause delivery. I am happy to do some customisation if needed.
The hikashop plugin currently instructs paypal to begin recurring payments, but you're saying there's no way to stop the payment outside of paypal? Could it be done by refunding payments for a set period - not very elegant but it might work?

I don't see how that would be possible. I'm not an expert in subscriptions but I don't think that you can pause a subscription or refund partially a recurring payment.
I would recommend that you contact Akeeba subscriptions as they are specialized on subscriptions and should know better than us if it would be possible to pause a subscription.

Hi Nicolas,
Thanks again for message. I think HikaShop is a great product, and I appreciate it's very good value. I'm stuck on how to solve this. Akeeba say they don't handle the payments with this plugin, that's all done by HikaShop. I had a look at the paypal API and that seems to include a way to suspend the account remotely, which I think is what I need. Anyway, I'm wondering about the best way to proceed, is it possible to get support from the team who wrote the akeeba subs plugin for you? I'm happy to pay for support, but I can't work out if there is anyone who can help! Sorry to sound confused, I know this is a new plugin.

Hi,

I checked the API on PayPal websites but the one used in our PayPal recurring plugin doesn't allow the use of the ManageRecurringPaymentsProfileStatus API call which requires a profile ID which is not provided in our case. From what I understand, it would require to rebuild the whole paypal recurring plugin to create a profile and be able to suspend the payments based on the profile if necessary.
So that's still possible from what I can understand but require quite a lot of work. I would recommend to look for a third party developer who could help you on that via our commercial jobs forum or joomlancers.com

Did you ask Akeeba Subscriptions if they can trigger the suspension with the PayPal API if the payment goes through their paypal recurring plugin ? Maybe it would be simpler to just use their solution in that case ?

OK, that helps to know. I need real world shipping options, so I can't do it all in Akeeba sadly. I have now spotted that we can suspend/resume subscriptions via our business account control panel in paypal, so that at least gives us a manual solution. I mention in case that's useful for anyone else. But to give customers access to suspend the subscription needs custom coding as you say. At the moment I think VM 3rd party developers are closer to having an off the shelf solution, but I'll update if I find a Hika solution out there.
