I have both menus set to 4 columns (set in Display>Content Menus>my category; and in System>Configuration>Display>Modules Main Default Options) but certain sub categories display 5 columns and it appears the items are not properly centered (text, picture, addtocart button). What did I do and how do i fix this? Also please note that if I navigate to the category through this path; mydomain.com/category/sub-category/product/listing the page appears normal with 4 columns as I set in the options, but clicking through the category menus it appears different.

That's the correct way of doing it. You must not be editing the correct menu/module options.

Please give a link to the page with the issue and we can tell you what to do more precisely.

Go in the menu Display->Content modules, edit the module with the id 179 and set the number of columns to 4 and the number of items to 12 and you will have it like you want.

Very good, thanks! ID #179 was unpublished but the changes still took effect front end, a little confusing. Either way my issue seems resolved, thanks a lot for your quick support. A+.
