The shop I am developing sells only 2 items, both of which are essentially the same product, merely in different colours.

There is a flat rate shipping charge of £1.50, however on orders of more than one item, I want the shipping to be free. I am using the Hikashop manual shipping plugin to calcualte shipping cost.

How can I achieve this?

Hi,

What you can do is create 2 manual shipping methods, one with a cost and for a max quantity of 1 item.
And another one free, for minimum 2 items in the cart.

Hi, I have done this, but no shipping costs are being added at all, whether ordering 1, or 2 or more items. I can't see anything I could've missed :S

Hi,

Can you show us how did you configured your 2 shipping methods through some screenshots ?

I've also just noticed on the 2 or more items configuration, whenever I save, the Restrictions checkbox does not remain checked.

Ok, I think that your problem can be coming from :
1. Your shipping zone restriction, are you sure that you are setting a United Kingdom address for your shipping address ?

2. Your product weight and dimensions, are you sure that you have set a weight and dimensions for your products ?

1)
When I go to the checkout on the site, I am not prompted for a shipping address before payment.

This is my checkout workflow:

The intention here is not to require any registration or login for the user as it is a very simple shop intended to just charge the user the appropriate amount to my client's PayPal account.

Though I found that on the 2 or more items shipping method, I had not set it to be restricted to the United Kingdom, hence the restrictions checkbox not remaining checked.

2)
I set the height and weight. I had left it blank as I hadn't considered it relevant. It is now calculating shipping costs correctly. Thank you.

Ok,
But you won't be able to use any zone restriction, or shipping method which have to communicate with a shipping platform because you need at least your customer's shipping address. So you'll probably find more information there :

If you want to have a checkout without registration but with address, you will have to have both "login" and "address" views in the checkout workflow. Then, in the Checkout tab of the configuration, you can change the option "registration" to "no registration" in order to remove the creation of a user account. Also, you can turn off the "login" option there to remove the login area of the checkout.
That way, you will still have the address form but no user account would be created.
That "Registration" option is only available in our commercial editions.

I tried that, using the following configuration. I get a no payment methods found alert as soon as I go to the checkout, and can't progress even after entering an address.

My configuration is:
Cart
Login
Address
Shipping
Payment
Status

Is this in the wrong order, or have I missed something out?

It is not related to the checkout workflow.

Probably some other modifications you made.
I invite you to check our FAQ on payment plugins not being displayed during the checkout where we list all the possible causes:
