I have seen various threads about using and adapting the Collect on Delivery payment method to enable provision of quotations. I have a new site under development which will sell heavy and large volume products and, while we are defining shipping methods and rates for smaller quantity orders on standard products up to single pallet size, we need to be able to quote specifically for delivery costs on larger weight orders, as well as for non-standard destinations.

Is it possible to force the Collect on Delivery payment method to appear ONLY in cases where No shipping method is defined, and to enable the order to be placed into the system using this so that shipping costs can be manually added - currently it does not seem possible to allow placing the order without a shipping method?

It would be good also to have the facility that no other payment method should be displayed in cases where no shipping method is defined. A optional special page redirect on placing the order using the Collect on Delivery method would also be useful so we can explain the subsequent procedure for payment, etc after we have added appropriate shipping costs to the order.

Maybe you could offer a slightly customised version of the standard Collect on Delivery Plug-in specifically for use as a Carriage and Shipping Quote mechanism along the lines suggested above - I think many users would find this very useful, not least to trap and deal with cases where customers would otherwise get any of the No Shipping Methods error messages.

I will give that a try and see if I can make it work the way I want - I had not thought of doing it this way.
